Race Recovery

You marathoners are probably laughing at me right now, but I’m actually kind of sore from the 8K yesterday.

I’ve broken into CJ’s stash of protein.

(I spent an embarrassingly long time trying to balance protein bars on the lids for this photo).

I guess he needs to supplement, because this is the kind of stuff I serve for dinner.

Leftover Tofu Black Bean Bowls! (For the record, CJ begged me all weekend to make this, until I finally did last night. He was even disappointed I wanted pizza on Saturday. He looked sad eating his pizza. Really, it’s apparently THAT good.)

The Shamrock Shuffle was fun! I felt decent energy-wise, but made the mistake of chugging some Gatorade after mile 2, and suffering cramps for the next 3 miles. (They had little kid volunteers handing out drinks, how could I resist?)

Today, Tina and I continued to reward ourselves by going to Yolk. Since we had brunch food yesterday, we opted to order off the lunch menu.

She had the Buffalo Chicken wrap, and I had the “Avalon Sunset,” which is just a fancy way to say “delicious sandwich with grilled chicken, bacon, avocado, tomato, and swiss.”

Any hints on how to combat soreness other than my current method of…eating large amounts of delicious food?

We Survived!

5 miles (or 8 K’s, as Chris says) completed!

Tia and I met our friend Meghan bright and early this morning for the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K, a just-about-5-mile doozy of a race.

2014-03-30 09.17.47

It was pretty packed, with about 30,000 people participating. The sun was out and it was a little chilly and brisk, but otherwise we lucked out with some good running temperatures. Tia, Meghan, and I all finished in about 50 minutes – Go us!

Everyone knows the rule that you can’t run a race without eating an epic brunch after, so we met up with Chris, CJ, and some other friends to chow down on some Wildberry.

Tia and I once read a blog post or article in which the writer was saying how she craves super healthy foods after getting in a great workout in order to keep the healthiness going. Obviously, we do not have the same mentality 🙂

Who else is training for a big fitness endeavor coming up or has crossed something off their bucket list recently? Shall we sign up for a 10K next, Tia?

Race Fuel

It’s been all about preparing for the Shamrock Shuffle over here!

Obviously, you must properly fuel your body with lots of healthy food…

Funky mood lighting courtesy of Butterfly Sushi. And in case you were wondering about the first picture…Yes, Tia did order 4 salmon avacado rolls. That’s how we roll, yo (sushi pun!).

Also key to one’s 8K training is watching movies that offer a glimpse into a possible distopian future. The better to motivate you to get in shape and run unless you want to be factionless, or something. In other words, I saw Divergent today.

Based on a young adult novel by Veronica Roth, a fellow Northwestern alum who graduated a year AFTER me and Tia, the movie is actually a little bit better than the book. The story overall has gained a lot of criticism for being a rip-off of the Hunger Games, but if you can get past that, it’s fairly enjoyable. At dinner last night, Chris, who just finished reading the first book, and Tia, who read 4 chapters and stopped, agreed that the envisioned world of the book/movie is very cool and different, but the writing is not very good. Either way, Veronica Roth is now probably a millionaire and Tia and I regret not making friends with her at NU when we still had a chance to lock those money bags down. Not that we knew her or could have foreseen her great future success.

On the agenda for tonight is more carbo-loading (lasagna for dinner!) and then we’re off to the Shuffle tomorrow! Wish us luck!

Baby Back Rib Soup

I’m hoping this is the last time I make soup until…this fall.

In fact, I think I made this dish because I’ve been dreaming of summer and BBQs, but it’s not yet in sight.

2014-03-27 19.04.41

I put baby back ribs, water, salt, and black pepper in the slower cooker on low for 8 hours to make a broth.

2014-03-27 18.23.16

The meat was definitely falling off the bones. I strained the broth and cooked tofu and veggies in it.

2014-03-27 18.33.43

I also added a few scoops of rice to thicken the soup up.

2014-03-27 19.04.41

So good!

Anyone else excited to BBQ/grill out? Or do you live somewhere warm enough to do so already? Which one do you call it? Barbecuing? Grilling?

San Francisco

That’s right, I’m back! I was lucky enough to spend the last 5 days in sunny San Francisco! My brother, my entire mom’s side of the family, and one of my cousin’s on my dad’s side and his family all live in that area – I really do get to visit people from the best places… I definitely won’t complain about the chance to escape this so-called midwestern “spring” we’ve been having. Lies!

As with most of my vacations, there was lots of drinking and eating involved.

On Friday, my brother and his friend took Chris and me out to Napa where we started off strong at Morimoto, of Iron Chef fame. Chris and I shared a lunch special with some extra sushi rolls for good measure. Because, y’know, we weren’t sure if there’d be enough food.

2014-03-21 13.08.10

Of course, we couldn’t leave Napa without visiting a vineyard. My brother is a member at Frog’s Leap Winery, so we got a free tasting and great samplings of wine. If you’re a nice member and know your stuff, like my brother is and does, they’ll even serve you off menu. The last time Chris and I visited Napa, we checked out 2 other places and we both agreed that Frog’s Leap has been the best so far. It has a very casual atmosphere and an interesting story. They pride themselves on being completely organic and non-irrigated (though Chris saw piping in the vineyard that might suggest otherwise…suspicious). You are also free to take your wine and wander the grounds, which we were happy to do. They had also had roosters!

2014-03-21 15.06.58

Saturday was National Corndog Day (By the way, is it “corndog” or “corn dog”?)! Did you know that was a thing??? Well, it is and it’s awesome. We checked out a food truck festival celebrating the event downtown. I will not post the pictures of me eating my amazing Louisiana Hotlink Corndog because they came out unattractive and kind of dirty, if you are a perv. But here’s an idea of what was served. Mm, so good when it hits your lips.

2014-03-22 13.01.02-1

Also, yes, I had a fried KitKat as well. We had to keep it light for dinner after a day of eating corndogs and drinking PBR, so obviously we had Korean BBQ at Gogi Time. Literally, that means “meat time,” and it lives up to its name.

2014-03-22 19.34.18

Topped off with some delicious drinks at my cousin’s house later that evening…

2014-03-22 21.21.59

Lime juice + vodka + ginger beer = party in my mouth.

The rest of the trip is a blur of more eating and imbibing. I got some quality dim sum, including my favorite…CHICKEN FEET!

2014-03-25 11.07.20

Oh yeah, come to mama. I know a lot of people will not find the above picture attractive, including both Chris and Tia. No worries – More for me!

Anyway, it’s back to the real world for me today. I am already missing the California warmth and general ability to be outside without a coat.

2014-03-21 13.56.39

The temps are supposed to rise just in time for our Shamrock Shuffle on Sunday, though! I ran 5 miles on the treadmill after work today and am now officially on “leg rest” until the race. I am pretty confident I can finish without passing out at this point. Whoohoo!

Anyone go on any fun trips recently? Chris says I only travel to visit family (I can’t help it if they live in fun cities!), but it would definitely be cool to go somewhere just because it’s awesome!

Clamless Clam Chowder

So I woke up this morning, and there was a fresh sheet of snow on the ground. Sigh.

I guess that’s why I decided to make something warm and comforting for dinner.

But first, I went to Mercadito for lunch again!

2014-03-25 11.50.09

2014-03-25 11.41.06

So why Clamless Clam Chowder? Well, I didn’t do it on purpose.

I went grocery shopping and got the below ingredients.

2014-03-25 18.02.01

I sauteed chopped potato, celery, onion, and butter together until they softened.

2014-03-25 18.25.47

And then I opened the clams…

2014-03-25 18.39.15

I’d gotten whole clams instead of minced/chopped clams. They looked gross to me (like alien fetuses or something) so I poured the juice in the soup, and threw the clams out.

I still added cream and chicken stock, and I must say, everything still tasted really good – just like Clam Chowder…minus the clams. Haha.

2014-03-25 19.05.26

To go with the soup, I sliced bread and topped it with butter, minced garlic, olive oil, and garlic salt for an easy “garlic bread.”

Anyone else have any cooking mishaps lately?

Repeat Meal, New Workout

Hi Everyone!

It’s me again. Tina is still off enjoying the glorious San Francisco weather. Lucky.

I CAN’T wait for it to warm up or at least stop snowing. One, because it’s officially Spring. Also because I want to wear this bag, and I don’t want to take it out in the snow.

2014-03-24 20.52.06

Yesterday night, I prepped Slow Cooker Turkey Chili for tonight dinner. This time, I put in half a red bell pepper leftover from Saturday’s egg scramble, and served it with half an avocado.

I knew dinner was going to be ready when I got home, so when my old coworker Michaela asked if i wanted to get a drink after work with her friend, I said sure.

I didn’t get any pictures, but we had red wine and appetizers at McCormick and Schmick’s.

I did cardio the past two days, so tonight I’m going to do Mary Helen Bowers’ Ballet Beautiful workout.

Fitnessista and Peanut Butter Fingers recently posted about this oh-so-sore leg workout you can stream on Amazon. I tried it last week, and man my legs hurt after! But in a good way. And I’m coming back for more, so I think that means I’d recommend it.

Talk to you guys later!
