Workout Clothes Spree

A few months ago, I wrote about work out clothes, and whether it was better to splurge or save.

It’s true that I’m about 90% more motivated to work out/during my workouts if I like my outfit. (Is that terrible?)

My current conclusion is – splurge on pants/crops, and save on tops. I’ve found that it’s more important to me that pants fit well, and don’t ride/scrunch up. They’re also easier to re-wear.

Here are a few of my recent purchases (from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, prices have since gone up).

(from left to right, top to bottom, Zella, Asics, Nike, Reebok).

I also bought 7 tops from Old Navy for $7 each. Can’t beat that!

Here are a couple of my favorites.

Do you dress differently for different workouts? I always wear capris/crops for yoga and spin. Yoga…too great of a chance for flashing the class if wearing shorts. This happened to my yoga instructor last weekend. Did not need to see that.

As a side note, a big congrats to Tina for getting a big promotion at work! Woohoo – congrats Tina!

Tomato and Mushroom Sauce + Upcoming Trip!

Hi Friends!

I just got from a sweaty spin class with Maya. I feel great now, but I definitely wanted to pass out for 1/2 of the class. It doesn’t help that it was in the mid-90s today.

CJ and I have been eating Freshii this week because they’re doing 5 days of $5 meals. (They are typically around $10). Yesterday we had the Pangoa Bowls with brown rice, corn, tomatoes, black beans, and avocado. Today,  I had the Antioxidant Crunch Salad with spinach, blueberries, and chicken (even though I don’t like fruit in salads) and CJ had a Kale and Chicken Bowl.

Anyways, there’s not going to be a whole lotta cookin’ over here this week. I’m also going to the Beyonce & Jay-Z concert at Soldier Field on Thursday, and I have a work outing on Friday.

Over the weekend, I made a yummy tomato and mushroom pasta sauce using only 5 ingredients

  • fresh tomatoes
  • mushrooms
  • garlic
  • olive oil
  • wine

Okaaay, I put in some salt too, so technically 6.

I served this with some pan-“grilled” chicken tenders and Cellentani.

In other news, my first 3 boxes from Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale arrived today. Poor CJ had to use a luggage cart to collect everything from the mailroom in our building. I’ll be sharing my finds later this week!

ALSO…we’re going to Miami! For CJ’s birthday, we will be taking a trip to Miami, hanging out on the beach, and going to the Patriots vs. Dolphins game. Neither of us have ever been to Miami – any suggestions for restaurants to try, places to see?

Hot Chocolate 15K

So pretty much out of the blue today, I signed up to run a 15K.

It went like this.

Michaela: i might do this
Tia: i would do 15K
Michaela: lets do it!!!

Wish me luck…I’ve barely run since my failed attempt at the Chase Corporate Challenge right before Memorial Day Weekend.

Ever sign up for a challenging race (or other activity) in a fleeting moment of grandiosity?

20+ Mile Bike Ride

Hi All – Hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend!

Mine actually started on Thursday – instead of work, we had a team outing at Arlington Heights Racetrack. I’m not really the betting type, but the food/drinks/company were good! Traffic was terrible though, so I missed the Chase Corporate Challenge 3.5 mile run. Tina ran it though.

In addition to eating/drinking on Friday, we also went to CJ’s coworkers’ BBQ where we had hotdogs, chicken, and steak, so on Sunday, we went on a 20+ mile bike ride. (22-26?)

Chicago Skyline!

Do you bike for fun? For transportation? I’m scared to ride my bike on the street – we saw a girl on her bike get hit by a car over the weekend 😦 Hope she was ok.

Halibut, Spinach, and Mashed Potatoes (no butter!)

Hi All,

I went running today! I finished up my monthly pass of unlimited yoga, so I’m back to working out at the gym. I decided not to renew my yoga pass because the studio I’ve been going to is limited to hot yoga. I’m not super keen on the idea of doing hot yoga in the summer when just walking down the street is a feat.

Next week is the Chase Corporate Challenge 3.5 mile run. Apparently, Tina isn’t actively training for it since it’ll be easy-peasy for her, but I haven’t run in over a month. I ran a little over 2.5 miles today before it got too hot. They really need to turn up the AC!

Anyways, I tried to make a healthier dinner with very little olive oil and no butter.

Last week, I made frozen ahi tuna fillets, and they turned out kind of tough. These were great though! CJ and I also ate while watching Cutthroat Kitchen. Have you guys seen that show? The chefs sabotage each other’s dishes. One guy had to make Sloppy Joes with halibut…and he also didn’t have bread. He ended up making these baked potatoes stuff with halibut. It looked good, but definitely wasn’t a Sloppy Joe.

I used Yukon Gold potatoes which are creamier and more flavorful than russet potatoes in my opinion. I cooked them in the microwave with water, and then mashed them with a fork (with some garlic salt and a tiny bit of cheddar cheese).

I seared the fish in a pan sprayed with a little olive oil, and the spinach was cooked with soy sauce and garlic.

Anyone else watch Cutthroat Kitchen? What kind of oil do you cook with? Olive? Peanut? Sunflower?

Weekend Workout

First of all, Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms out there! Make sure you let everyone else do the work today 🙂

Chris’s family was in town this weekend for a visit, so I was jam-packed with activities from Friday night until this morning. Most of those activities were eating, so I was a happy camper.

I did manage to fit in a quick at-home dumbbell workout yesterday morning. I’ve said before that I often reference YouTube and Pinterest for non-running workouts. This is still a great resource for me now that I’m not actively training for any upcoming races (that I know of yet!). I try to alternate running and some type of strength training each day for exercise and its been a good routine so far. I’ve also been pretty good about keeping up with my morning workouts, too!

Anyway, now that I’ve been following along with a bunch of online workout videos, I’ve been able to mix & match my favorite strength moves to create my own routines. I thought I’d share what I did yesterday (If you want to follow along, you’ll need a pair of 3-lb and 5-lb dumbbells – I got mine cheap on Amazon):

Started off with this arm strength circuit from Fitsugar:

Followed by:

It looks like a lot, but it only took me about 25-30 minutes total. You can always do more repetitions of certain moves if you want to work those muscles more, or modify anything you need. Please note that I’m no expert, so do not overwork and injure yourself and then sue me, because I don’t have much money, so the joke will be on you and won’t that be embarrassing.

Happy fitness-ing! Let me know how it goes if you try it 🙂

Workout Clothes

For the record, I had no idea Tina was planning a post on Running Gear. Great minds think alike? 😉

Yesterday during my lunch break, I ran over to Old Navy on State Street (Chicago) to grab a few items.

2014-04-17 17.33.04

Last Sunday, I started at a new yoga studio, Barefeet Power Yoga, in the West Loop. There’s a $30/month unlimited package for new students so I figured I’d sign up. More on the yoga studio later!

I realized that all my workout clothes were in the laundry hamper/washing machine so I didn’t have anything to wear for my class at 6pm. I’ve done hot yoga in a regular cotton tank and cotton pants before…not recommended.  Shopping time! I also picked up some socks to combat my missing laundry issue. This is the danger of working so close to State Street (and Michigan Avenue).

Question(s) of the Day: Where do you guys get workout clothes from? I usually stick to places like Old Navy and Forever 21 for shirts/tanks/shorts since they have a lot of cheap options now, but all my fleeces are from The North Face.  Are the $60 Lululemon tanks worth it? What do you like to save/splurge on?
