Luck of the Chi-rish

While St. Patrick’s Day isn’t officially until Tuesday, we all know the real party was this weekend. I hope everyone is successfully recovered on this lovely Sunday funday.

You’ve seen how Tia and I celebrate a lowkey version of St. Patrick’s Day, but this weekend was party central because Chris’s high school and college friends were in town for the weekend and you know you’re in for some fun stories when that happens. Let’s just say that one of them might have thrown up on Tia once.

The crew arrived Friday night and we ended up at Three Dots and a Dash, which you might remember from that time we ate some funky chips. There was much imbibing.

Banana dolphin!

Afterward, we searched for some late night eats and ended up at Taco Burrito King. To be honest, I had never heard of this place, but the out-of-towners we were with had rave reviews. It was an order-at-the-counter Mexican place and while all the food looked decent, Chris and I just split some chips and salsa. The salsa was nice and spicy. Unfortunately, we think one of our friends got food poisoning from the burrito he ate here because the poor guy got sick and had to stay in all of Saturday. So, buyer beware!

The rest of us, fortunately, were well enough to hit up some house parties bright and early Saturday morning. I sent this picture to my friend Joyce, whose drink of choice is Bailey’s.

She replied, “Right now?!” and I realized that it was 9:17am. Hey, you can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning.

The rest of the day followed in typical fashion. At the first party we went to, we could see into another apartment across the street where an unattractive naked man was walking around, baring all in front of his floor-to-ceiling windows. That’s confidence right there. Chris and I started off with his big group of friends and we slowly lost track of them until 3pm when we headed back to my place to chill until the gang found each other again.

Another St. Patty’s in the books. My only regret is not having a green beer, but I guess I still have until Tuesday to track one down.

How was your weekend? Follow-up question: Shamrock Shakes should be available all year round, right?

Weekend Adventures

Hi Friends!

How was your weekend? I’m excited because I only have two more days of work this week! 5 day weekend for Labor Day!

This past weekend, Tina was in Michigan, and I played tourist in my own city since some friends were in town.

First on the list – brunch.

Also, a Cubs game (the Cubs WON!)

Moving On Up

Well, Tia let the cat outta the bag (Thanks for the shout-out!) but I recently got promoted at work! My former manager put in her notice and now I have her position, but we haven’t hired anyone to backfill my old position yet, so I’ve been doing double the work for the past week.

That is to say, is it really only Tuesday?

All kidding aside, I am super grateful for the opportunity to be Mr. Manager (Arrested Development ref, high five!), but it has been wearing me down considerably. At least I had a good excuse to celebrate with lots of food and drank!

Beers at Randolph Tavern for my manager’s going-away happy hour. I work in a fairly female-dominated office, and all my coworkers got wine or cocktails. I felt super classy when these bad boys arrived 🙂

Chris’s celebration treat from over the weekend. We went to Burger Bistro, which I’ve been wanting to try out since it opened because it’s right by where I live and has burgers and beer and a patio. The ultimate dining trifecta. A few months ago, Tia very rudely ate here without me (Just kidding, we had a major failure in communication that day and she and CJ unintentionally ended up there without us). I expected the burger to be bigger, but it was still super filling. Chris got a kangaroo burger! He said it just tasted like regular beef, though.

Anyway, it’s always nice to feel like you’re movin’ on up in the world. Any recent successes (big or small) you guys have to share lately?

Beyonce + Jay-Z Concert

I forgot I haven’t posted about this yet! This time last week, I was at Soldier Field in Chicago at the Beyonce and Jay-Z concert.

2014-07-24 21.02.37

Craaaaazy….or should I say…cray?

2014-07-24 21.36.19

We were in the balcony around the 50 yard line. They would have been great seats for a Bears game, but as you can see, the stage was pretty still far.

It was a great performance for both Bey and Jay. I get why people are speculating that they’re breaking up after the tour though.  For example, Beyonce would sing about infidelity, and then sing about forgiveness. Jay-Z would reach out to her on stage, and then she’d shrug him off. But this is a heavily produced show – I’m sure it’s just part of the act.

We also went to BYOB sushi at Kai in the South Loop.

The only not fun part was getting out of Soldier Field – it took 2 hours! Worth it.

Anyone been to any concerts lately?

Dinner Party + Game Night

Hi Everyone! How was your weekend? I had a nice little staycation today, since I had a summer day to use up. I basically just ran errands and did laundry, but it was nice to sleep in!

My weekend started on Friday, when my company loaded us up on school buses to go to a nature museum for a camp-themed party…with an open bar. We were specifically asked not to post any pictures from the event on social media.

On Saturday, Tina and I had the following convo on Gchat.

Tina: what are you guys up to today?
Tia: no plans
Tina: if you want to hang out, chris has a new board game and we can play CJ’s game
Tia: do you guys want to come here?
Tina: sure
Tia: do you want to get dinner first? or dinner down here? or i could make dinner
Tina: ooh, making dinner sounds fun
So dinner and game night it was! I threatened to make my amazing quinoa dish, since Chris claims to hate quinoa, but I settled for a version of my 10 Minute Tilapia & Spinach with Yukon Gold Potato Fries with black pepper, garlic, and truffle oil.

Pretending to smash Tina in the face with said box of chicken stock?
2014-07-26 18.32.39
Tina brought 2 bottles of wine (and brownies!)…and posed for pictures while I labored away at our meal. Just kidding.

After our tummies were full, we broke out the board games.
CJ and Chris always get super competitive, so Tina and I jokingly claim that we don’t like playing with them.
First up, Munchkin, a humorous game that involves fighting monsters.
2014-07-26 19.57.40
2014-07-26 19.58.04
And then, Pandemic, a cooperative board game where all players band together to prevent four diseases from wiping out the world.

Tina made faces while the boys were bogged down with figuring out game rules/details.
A successful night! Sometimes the best nights are the impromptu ones!
Do you make spur of the moment plans with friends? Do you have double dates at home, and what meals do you  serve? What’s your favorite board game?

Tomato and Mushroom Sauce + Upcoming Trip!

Hi Friends!

I just got from a sweaty spin class with Maya. I feel great now, but I definitely wanted to pass out for 1/2 of the class. It doesn’t help that it was in the mid-90s today.

CJ and I have been eating Freshii this week because they’re doing 5 days of $5 meals. (They are typically around $10). Yesterday we had the Pangoa Bowls with brown rice, corn, tomatoes, black beans, and avocado. Today,  I had the Antioxidant Crunch Salad with spinach, blueberries, and chicken (even though I don’t like fruit in salads) and CJ had a Kale and Chicken Bowl.

Anyways, there’s not going to be a whole lotta cookin’ over here this week. I’m also going to the Beyonce & Jay-Z concert at Soldier Field on Thursday, and I have a work outing on Friday.

Over the weekend, I made a yummy tomato and mushroom pasta sauce using only 5 ingredients

  • fresh tomatoes
  • mushrooms
  • garlic
  • olive oil
  • wine

Okaaay, I put in some salt too, so technically 6.

2014-07-20 19.01.29

I served this with some pan-“grilled” chicken tenders and Cellentani.

In other news, my first 3 boxes from Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale arrived today. Poor CJ had to use a luggage cart to collect everything from the mailroom in our building. I’ll be sharing my finds later this week!

ALSO…we’re going to Miami! For CJ’s birthday, we will be taking a trip to Miami, hanging out on the beach, and going to the Patriots vs. Dolphins game. Neither of us have ever been to Miami – any suggestions for restaurants to try, places to see?

Chili Roasted Chickpeas

Hi Everyone!

How was your weekend? Meghan, Maya, Tina, and I started off the weekend by going to the Piece Brewery and Pizzeria in Wicker Park on Friday, and sharing a large pizza -1/2 pepperoni and green pepper, 1/2 sausage and mushroom.

2014-07-18 20.05.29

Yum.

Over the weekend, I also spent way too many hours browsing the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, watched Sherlock on Netflix, completed an arm workout Youtube video Tina posted about, (still sore!) and made roasted chickpeas.

2014-07-13 14.59.09

  • 1 can chickpeas, drained, rinsed, patted dry
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • chili powder
  • salt

You can also use garlic salt, paprika, or any other seasoning you wish.

2014-07-13 15.45.12

Roast at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

Do you make any healthy treats to snack on? I also like kale chips.
